HP Compaq Presario CQ40-337TU on Ubuntu 9.04

On computer exhibition in Jakarta (Pekan Raya Jakarta 2009), about 5 days ago (23 June 2009), I was buying a notebook. I buy a CQ series of HP-Compaq, the Presario CQ40-337TU exactly. I choose this type because it’s have a balance between the price (540$) and the quality (HP-COMPACT).

I have a plan to install dual OS (XP and Linux) on it. But, I’m facing some problem. When installing XP, the installer can not found my HDD device ( I think it’s using the AHCI mode). I check my driver CD, and it’s only provide driver for VISTA. The official site also didn’t provide the driver for XP.

This is the detailed notebook spesification

  Device 3x USB 2.0, VGA, Card Reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS Pro, MS Pro Duo), and Webcamera.
  Optical Drive DVD±RW, LightScribe

There is an option to put the AHCI driver into installer CD using the NLite system. But I think, this is the right moment for me to fully move from closed source system to open source system (that’s what I call share). Anyway, it’s hard enough to find exact driver for my laptop if I use MS XP. Using VISTA on it? I think it’s a bad idea using a VISTA system on 1GB memory.

I prefers using a Linux as my operating system, instead of VISTA :p . For the distro, I prefers to use the RPM based because I know a little bit command on RedHat 9. I’m familiar with PCLinuxOS 2007 (another RPM based), and I’ve tried the Mandriva 2008. For the desktop manager, I prefers KDE ( I love the dragon ).

Suddenly I remember that the Ubuntu Ship-it was delivering an Ubuntu 9.04 “Jaunty Jackalope” CD to me. Well, it’s time for me to give it a try. I put the CD, boot it, and enjoy the desktop live CD system running. Seems everything works fine. The desktop effect running well, network device connected (wire and wireless works fine), and the webcam just work fine using cheese.

The only one big problem is… I can’t hear any sound. We can not do some presentasion if the sound wasn’t present. The sound can hear only with the headset plug in. But the sound still not good. It’s constantly delaying and play fast.

I’m changing the Pulse Audio driver, and back to ALSA driver. I also adding this two parameter into alsa-base.conf

and everything works fine. The sound was out from both device, the laptop speaker and the headset.

    nyarinya driver xpnya jgn type yg sama bro,
    cari aja versi yg mirip2 angka depannya

    ky gw kan make CQ2030L (gw tulis di blog gw), nah gw nyari2 gada driver XPnya tp pas gw ngulik2 search sendiri, mulainya dr buka hp.com taunya ada driver di versi CQ2000, cari aja dr keyword presarionya, trus cek deh spec2nya mirip2 ga? slama chipset mobonya sama biasanya dpt smuanya sound sampe lan card.

    biasanya tipe2 yg ada disini tuh khusus tuk peredaran indonesia, dan microsoft ngepush pc brand make vista , ga disediain driver XP soalnya gada hukum disini yg harus nyediain driver utk driver XP. klo diluar biasanya ada hukumnya harus ada driver XP makanya disediain.

    Wah, aku juga pake laptop yang sama CQ40-337TU. dan udah aku coba install ubuntu 9.04, selain dari SUARA-nya emang lancar dan bagus. Hmm, baru tau kalo bisa dibikin suaranya nongol. hehe.. Nah, terus aku ganti pake Fedora 11 Leonidas, hm… semuanya jalan lancaarrrrrrr!!!! gak ada yang error.. Tapi sayang pas pake gnome, si gnome-power-manager bertingkah aneh2 tuh… Kabel AC di colokin icon nya bener, pas aku cabut, e.. ee… masih dianggap pake kabel AC, terus pas aku colokin lagi, iconnya masih nganggap pake batere. Kacaw. padahal aku suka banget pake linux. Ada solusi?????

        :cool: Soalnya ane lebih suka perintah RedHat. lebih menyentuh… hehehhe… (Mungkin awalnya aku belajar dari RedHat 7 yang dulu yah.. ):???: Nah, untuk programming kayak aku lebih suka ke fedora. terus dukungan kernel-pae nya ituloh yang bikin aku cinta. wow… Kalo ubuntu mau dukungan PAE musti install terpisah untuk desktopnya.. Tapi salut deh…. Ubuntu juga hebat. Yah, gimana hobi penggunanya aja sih :cool:

    seminggu ini kulihat iklan di koran koq sangat menggiurkan.
    laptop ini di bandrol dengan harga Rp. 4.999.999,..
    bisa nyicil lagi via adira, tentu saja membuatku ngiler.

    Dan sampelah daku kesini. pingin tahu performanya di linux.
    karena tentusaja akan kupasang linux. tapi sebelomnya akan ku upgrade ramnya mjd 2GB. mungkin akan di pasang virtualbox di atasnya. dan di dalem virtual box itu di pasang minix (nyicipi simbahnya linux) dan berabagai OS yang ingin ku trial.

    Wah! Merupakan berita yang menggembirakan nich!
    Karena CQ40 saya itu yang 328TU. Harusnya sama dengan 337TU.
    Tapi saya masih bingung dengan apa yang anda katakan:
    “I’m changing the Pulse Audio driver … the laptop speaker and the headset”.
    Maklum saya masih awam dengan Ubuntu ini. Baru pertama kali nyoba sich! Bisa memberikan penjelasan yang lebih detail?

    Bgni,sy pendtg br d ubuntu..jg menggunakan compaq cq40 tp seri blkgx gag tau..spesifikasix mirip..
    stlh diinstall ubuntu 9.04 wlan ama sound nya gag aktif..
    Yg sound dh ad d atas tar dcoba..yg wlan it yg bkin sy pusing..

    so far yG ga befungsi itu sound,, wireless, camera,, huft
