How to Run Windows Program on Linux Using Wine

Since many Windows operating system (OS) program doesn’t always available on Linux, many users afraid to fully migrate into new OS such Linux.

But you don’t have a worry. There’s a team developer who create a program which can emulate Windows program so it can run on Linux.

Here is a little description about Wine from the developers:

Wine (originally an acronym for “Wine Is Not an Emulator”) is a compatibility layer capable of running Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant operating systems, such as Linux, Mac OSX, & BSD. Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop.

If you install Wine in fully destop environment, such Unity, Gnome, or KDE, there will be a shorcut in start menu to run Windows program. If you install another Windows program, it will be added automatically on Wine submenu.

To install wine program on Linux (Debian based), simply run this command on your console (you’ll be prompted to enter your password).
sudo apt-get install wine

To install Windows program, you can run it via file manager, such Thunar. Find any windows installer program and right click on it. And then, select “Wine Windows Program Loader” to execute the program.

If you install Wine in fully desktop environment, such Unity, Gnome, or KDE, there will be a shorcut in start menu to run Windows program. If you install another Windows program, it will be added automatically on Wine submenu.

But if you install Wine in windows manager environment, such Openbox, there’s no shortcut to run those program. That mean, you have to create the shortcut by yourself.

The key is you must understand where’s the drive C location on wine installed program. And than, locate the installed program on Program Files Folder.

On my Debian machine, the drive C location in in:
/home/YOUR_HOME_FOLDER_NAME/.wine/drive_c/

And this is some command example to run Windows Program on Linux
wine "/home/YOUR_HOME_FOLDER_NAME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Adobe/Photoshop 7.0/Photoshop.exe"
